Green Rail Corridor
The Rail Corridor is the site of Singapore's previous rail link to Malaysia. Its revitalization aims to create a public space that provides a green oasis contrasting with the intensity of urban life. The site encompasses four important activity nodes: Buona Vista, the Bukit Timah Railway Station area, the former Bukit Timah Fire Station, and Kranji.

The Singapore Rail Corridor is more than a park connector or a trail; it is an inspired community space offering an extraordinary experience that will be a lasting legacy for all Singaporeans. It’s the reinvention of a hidden space within Singapore to inspire movement and connection, imaginative thought, innovative living and working, intuitive play and new ways of experiencing the environment.
The rail corridor is a seamless sequence of destinations celebrating the interactions between city, nature, land, water, community and art encouraging new ways of seeing and new ways of feeling. It is also a green and vibrant corridor of imagination feeding the future creativity and identity of Singapore.
Spanning the island south to north, from the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station to the Woodlands Checkpoint, the corridor is the site of Singapore's previous rail link to Malaysia. Its revitalization aims to create a public space that provides a green oasis contrasting with the intensity of urban life. The site encompasses four important activity nodes: Buona Vista, the Bukit Timah Railway Station area, the former Bukit Timah Fire Station, and Kranji. In addition to this, the proposal incorporates the creation of two special interest areas through the adaptive reuse of the former Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and an "urban-green-blue integrated concept" at Choa Chu Kang.
Running from the south to the north coast of the Island of Singapore, the rail corridor previously provided a rail link to neighbouring Malaysia. The opportunity to revitalise the rail corridor into a green public space, and a respite from the intense urban conditions of Singapore itself, is a unique one. The Government of Singapore is highly ambitious and asks for proposals for four crucial nodal points on the Rail Corridor, including a former railway station, fire station, new housing, and other new programs, as well as a masterplan for the entire length of the corridor.
MVRDV propose to make the Singapore Rail Corridor as more than just a park connector or a trail: to transform it into an inspired community space offering an extraordinary experience that will be a lasting legacy for all Singaporeans. The team saw the corridor as a creative conduit connecting the world with the authentic heritage, nature and community of Singapore. It’s the reinvention of a hidden space within Singapore to inspire movement and new ways of experiencing the environment. It’s a seamless sequence of destinations celebrating the interactions between city, nature, land, water, community and art encouraging new ways of seeing and new ways of feeling. And it is a green, vibrant and healthy corridor of imagination feeding the future creativity, biodiversity and identity of Singapore.
The new Green Rail Corridor will create a series of world class destinations, Singaporean landmarks, and community connections, and will be brought together by a series of interactive apps and learning programs to truly engage Singaporeans with their natural and built heritage.
