MVRDV - GIDEON MAASLAND

Gideon Maasland

Director Studio #8 | Architect

Director and Architect Gideon Maasland (Sliedrecht, NL – 1978) joined MVRDV in 2016. With extensive experience acquired over a 15-year career at several high profile Dutch offices, Maasland leads MVRDV’s Studio 8, which is responsible for large-scale, complex buildings. Renowned for his detailed and dedicated approach, which is due to his diverse educational and professional background that not only includes extensive architectural practice, but also carpentry and construction methodology, Maasland’s work is hands-on. This proved invaluable to the success of his studio in the design and construction of multiple complex, large-scale projects, which meet design expectations in the completed building, and in consistently managed processes. To ensure the highest quality, Maasland is often on the construction site directly overseeing building processes.

Maasland has been fundamental to the construction process of Valley (2022), a 75,000m2 mixed-use building in Amsterdam, the construction of a 61,800m2 residential Grotius Towers (2022) in The Hague as well as Tripolis Park (2023), the renovation and enlargement of an architecturally significant office building in Amsterdam. Other exceptional projects include Crystal Houses (2016) in Amsterdam and competition designs for Schiphol’s Terminal A and the Theater aan de Parade in Den Bosch. In addition, he worked on the Rotterdam Rooftop Walk (2022), allowing visitors to venture across a variety of the city’s rooftops at a height of 30 metres during one month.

Currently, Maasland is working on various projects, such as Shenzhen Terraces, a 95,000-square-metre mixed-use development planned for the city's university neighbourhood, a masterplan and a new, green rooftop for the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht, new offices for ANWB in The Hague and other projects in the Netherlands, Taiwan, and all over the world.

“I love to work on great buildings that make a difference to the people using them or living close to them. Nothing is impossible with the help of a great team of experts, full integration of the latest BIM/scripting techniques and dedication to relationship management. But we can never make good projects without good clients.” - Gideon Maasland
