The City of Rennes and Poste Immo, a real estate subsidiary of the La Poste group, announce MVRDV as one for four finalists to transform the Palais du Commerce, the historic La Poste building. The 12,000m² building, spread over 5 floors was built at the end of the 19th century and is located at the historic Place de la République in the centre of the city. Due to its location, neoclassical architecture and the history of its construction, it is one of the emblematic buildings of the city of Rennes. The competition also seeks to transform the public spaces around the Palais du Commerce next to the Vilaine river, a large transportation hub not currently utilised to their full potential.
MVRDV are selected together with Frey and Bernard Desmoulin alongside other finalists Altarea Cogedim with François Chatillon and Snohetta; Vinci Immobilier with OMA and ALL Architects and the consortium of Compagnie de Phalsbourg with Perrot- Richard. Competing teams have until October to present their design proposal and the winner will be announced in November. The project is set for completion in 2025.
