The residential area of Nieuw Leyden in Leiden is a 16-acre former industrial site with 670 homes masterplanned by MVRDV and completed in 2013. Of this, roughly half of are in high-rise buildings and the other half are single family homes of which many were built by their owners. Nieuw Leyden was one of the first neighborhoods in the Netherlands where the principle of private ownership was been widely applied. This has led to distinctive residential environment with a high degree of differentiation and variation, which is also highly cohesive due to the strict rules and the land development plan established by MVRDV. Jacob will discuss the many factors which led to the project's success.
