Winy Maas to lecture on 'biodivercity' in our urban environments in Tournai on April 23rd

undefined

On April 23rd, Winy Maas will give a lecture in Tournai on the project Biodivercity, developed together with The Why Factory. As the city and urbanization cover a big part of the earth, the question of how to preserve and enrich the amount of animal species becomes crucial. Meanwhile many species are already taking the lead by migrating to the city and adapting to urbanized environments. The project Biodivercity explores ways to accelerate this ongoing process of (im)migration of species using contemporary concepts of biology such as ‘scaling’, the measuring of diversity and the principle of ecological succession. Biodivercity aims to understand the potential beneficial impact of urbanization upon biodiversity through the concept of intermediate disturbance and studies the way soil, bacteria and waste in the city can encourage the presence of certain plants and animals.
