NetherlandsNow is part of the "It Happened Here" Framing the Future series, organised by the AIA New York and CultureNOW. During the 4th of July holiday, It Happened Here - a weekend compressing 400 years of New York's history into four days - will celebrate this anniversary with a day of programming devoted to each century of the city’s life. On 7 July, the final day of the festivities, NetherlandsNow will assess New York in the 21st century with the Framing the Future series of panels, exploring the multiple urban challenges and opportunities ahead.
With the city originally founded as New Amsterdam by the Dutch, the event reflects on cultural differences and synergies between the USA and the Netherlands, and showcases how an exchange of knowledge, innovation, and ideas can help us address the issues our built and natural environment faces today. Partner Jan Knikker will join a panel on Design Innovations: A Panorama of Dutch Architecture Today. Through a short showcase of MVRDV projects, including Radio Tower & Hotel, Tainan Spring, and Markthal, Jan will highlight the ideas and philosophies underpinning the practice's work, and how MVRDV continues to develop innovative strategies to tackle the 21st century's challenges and urgencies.
Jan Knikker joined MVRDV in 2008. Prior to this, Knikker shaped OMA’s public image for nearly a decade, after having first began his career as a journalist. As Partner and Director of Strategy at MVRDV, Knikker drives Business Development and Public Relations efforts, spearheading a large and dynamic studio that also includes the office’s visualization capacity. He further leads the office’s branding efforts, and MVRDV’s expansion into new regions and typologies, by supporting the office’s ambition to generate solutions to global challenges through a multifaceted approach to architecture, urbanism, and computing.
