How do you design with recycled materials and celebrate the local context?
On 22 June at Concentrico, Associate Director and Head of Interior Aser Giménez-Ortega will lead a workshop about how MVRDV uses inventive techniques to repurpose materials in their designs. Whether from wine corks - a local symbol of the La Rioja region - reclaimed plastic from rivers or recycled glass, or recycled plastic mats, Aser will explain how MVRDV is able to create joyful and adventurous spaces where people can pause, meet, and play, and showcase the possibilities for recycled materials with the local context in mind.
This hands-on experience will also explore traditional local cork weaving techniques, delving into their origins, applications, and production methods. Participants will have the opportunity to work directly with tools and samples, guided by experienced local artisans from northern Spain.
Head of Interior Aser Giménez-Ortega oversees the work of MVRDV's Interiors specialists. Having joined MVRDV in 2007 after working as an architect and urban designer in Spain, Brazil, and elsewhere in the Netherlands, he has extensive experience leading projects of various scales and phases, ranging from masterplans to interior design and from concept to construction. Aser played an integral role in the conceptualisation, realisation, and management of Oslo’s DNB bank headquarters, as well as Shanghai’s Hongqiao Flower Building. Aser has also been responsible for a range of interior and retail projects both in Europe and in Asia, including Tiffany & Co.'s stores in Shanghai Taikoo Li, China, and Singapore Changi Airport.
