How does MVRDV deliver sustainable designs?

On 20 June at the Chengdu Sustainable Design Exhibition, Director PR & BD Asia Carmen Xu will deliver the talk "REvive" and explain our work in sustainability, centered on the Mega Mat originally exhibited at the 2025 Bangkok Design Week. This temporary installation,  constructed from more than 500 recycled plastic mats, was a large-scale art work, a joyful gathering place, and an 860-square-metre infographic all in one. It has since been transformed into the Mini Mat, with 24 modules travelling from their original location in the Thai capital city to Chengdu to form part of the exhibition in Chengdu, while others have been upcycled into new objects, repurposed as yoga mats, or donated to temples and museums. The Mini Mat remains a tactile, visual example of how discarded materials can be transformed into meaningful design, a purpose embodied in other MVRDV projects such as Bulgari Shanghai, and in transformations such as the Expo Pavilion 2.0.

Carmen Xu is Director of PR and BD Asia, overseeing the external and internal communications across Public Relations and Business Development of MVRDV in Asia market, with a particular focus on the office’s branding and PR strategy in China. She worked as the PR Manager for MVRDV's Shanghai office between 2014 – 2015, where she contributed to MVRDV’s close collaboration with Power Station of Art and brought the “Vertical Village” to the Shanghai Biennale in 2014. Before returning to MVRDV in 2020, she worked with a number of design studios and architects including BIG, SOM, and Neri&Hu, providing branding strategies and social media services to help their growth in China.
