How does MVRDV design for both density and quality?
On 19 June, at the Night of Architecture and Design at the Slovak University of Technology, Gijs Rikken will explain MVRDV's approach to densification from a number of perspectives - densifying within existing cities, densifying with the existing fabric, adding density through new cities and quarters, and density in future cities - and incorporating research, temporary, and realised projects. Beginning with an examination of how density is a response and solution to current urgencies such as climate change, Gijs will reflect on how using data, mixing functions, and sustainable projects can deliver both quality and density, as well as where they should be located, and why.

Associate Design Director and Architect, Gijs Rikken joined MVRDV in 2007 after completing his Master of Architecture at the Eindhoven University of Technology. As Design Director for Studio NL+, Rikken drives design direction for the development and execution of a wide variety of projects in the Netherlands and abroad, ranging from large-scale, complex buildings to detailed innovative material-research.
Gijs is responsible for the development and construction of Valley, a 75,000m2 mixed-use building in Amsterdam, which boasts three residential, green-covered towers and a publicly accessible, vertical park. Other key projects include the Glass Farm in Schijndel, The Crystal Houses in Amsterdam, the Balancing Barn in Suffolk, England and Tripolis Park in Amsterdam.
