What do we mean by resilience, and how do we develop projects with resilience in mind?

On 16 May, partner Bertrand Schippan will be deliver a lecture freely available to the public as part of DOMa's lecture series. Titled Resilient Future(s), Bertrand will explore a diverse range of MVRDV's work, from research and catalogues through to ongoing and fully realised projects, in which he will explain that resilience underpins the practice's output, from finding ways to adapt existing structures and develop new ones with sea level rise in mind via the Sea Level Rise Catalogue, to the ambitious sustainable construction principles guiding the Tour & Taxis masterplan.

Partner, Architect and Urbanist, Bertrand Schippan leads major urban projects in France and beyond. With experience at FGP Atelier, Ateliers Jean Nouvel, and West 8 before joining MVRDV in 2006, he brings a versatile approach to architecture and urbanism, shaped by his education at ENSA Lille, ETSAC Coruña, and TU Eindhoven.

Schippan has played a decisive role in transformative projects, including Tour & Taxis Lake Side in Brussels, a large-scale mixed-use development, and Lyon Part-Dieu, one of Europe’s largest urban transformations. His leadership has also shaped Gaîté Montparnasse in Paris and Ascension Paysagère in Rennes, reinforcing MVRDV’s presence in France. Instrumental in MVRDV’s Grand Paris strategy, Schippan was key in establishing the Paris office and continues to oversee major projects across the country.
