How does MVRDV view transformations and carbon?

On 14 May, founding partner Jacob van Rijs will speak at the Detmolder Design Woche 2025 and how the practice is addressing current challenges and opportunities in architecture and urbanism. Reflecting on MVRDV's recent Carbon Confessions exhibition in Munich, in which we gave an honest behind-the-scenes look at the everyday work in the "construction revolution", and our quest for carbon reduction. Jacob will also discuss some key transformation projects which help support and deliver on our carbon reduction ambitions, including how a dated 1990s office building was converted into an eye-catching entrance marker for Berlin's Atelier Gardens, and how a tower in Shenzhen, China which was deemed not fit for purpose became a colourful women and children's centre.

The ‘VR’ of MVRDV, Jacob van Rijs is renowned for his dedication to bold concepts combining daring ideas with a humane and user-friendly approach. Van Rijs has developed this approach over the past 30 years in practice, leading to a wide range of the office’s most notable projects, from cultural and civic buildings to transformations, and from residential buildings and social housing to interiors. Recently appointed Full Professor of Architecture Design at TU Eindhoven, he teaches and lectures worldwide.
