Markthal reaches its first birthday, receives more visitors than Eiffel tower

Today marks the first anniversary of the Markthal's opening. Exactly one year ago today, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands opened the building to enormous crowds of onlookers. In the first week alone, 350.000 people visited the Markthal, and now, one year later, the building has received a total of 8 million visitors, far surpassing initial estimates of 4 million visitors in the first year, and topping cultural attractions such as the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Eiffel Tower, and the Sistine Chapel.

To mark the building's one year anniversary and its extraordinary international success, MVRDV commissioned a series of portraits of the building's residents and the market's vendors, along with video interviews of their experiences in Markthal. These have been published on Archdaily, the world's most visited architecture website, together with an article written by Jan Knikker, MVRDV's Head of Public Relations and Business Development (available here), and an interview by Archdaily with Winy Maas and Jan Knikker about the PR strategy surrounding the building (available here).
